Founded in 2010 by the College of Anaesthesiologists & Intensivists, the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPM) has rapidly grown, emphasizing the importance of pain management. Originating in the 1960s and 70s, pain medicine has seen significant developments, with pioneers like Dr. R. Vamadevan and Dr. Sylviya Perera laying the groundwork in the late 1970s and 80s.
Key milestones include the 1998 establishment of a pain clinic at Apeksha Hospital and the creation of a dedicated Pain Management Unit at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in 2013. Under Dr. Samitha Jayawickrama, this unit became a premier training center.
FPM's achievements include setting up pain clinics nationwide, launching the Essential Pain Management program in 2014, and a certificate course for nurses in 2019. Public education and international collaboration further advance their mission.
